The Somerled apartments are the result of a major transformation and expansion of an existing building. The building had to undergo significant structural adaptation to accommodate its new use. In response to the housing crisis, the transformation allowed for the creation of 46 rental residential housing units over 3 floors with a basement.
Seeking to preserve the building and maintain it’s memory that was rooted in the community for many years, the architectural approach proposes to utilise and enhance the existing masonry. The proposal creates a variety of volumes, textures, and subtle shades of red. The sleek facades welcome a series of balconies delicately arranged in a staggered pattern, topped with a light metal railing, thus creating a dynamic facade.
